Rye

This ancient monument was built in 1329 and known as Landgate when Edward III made grants for further fortifying the town, and of the four gateways built, this is the only existing one. It has a chamber over the arch and the tow towers. There were gates, a portcullis and a drawbridge.

The Ypres Tower is one of the oldest buildings in Rye, and survived the burning of the town by the French at the end of the fourteenth century.
